The PI had been studying student radicalism as a social construct ever since he joined the Centre For Studies in Social Sciences as an ICSSR Doctoral Fellow in 1986.His Doctoral Dissertation, Students Radical Social Change (1991), which was later published in revised form by The University of Burdwan in 2003, was the PIs first study of student radicalism. It was followed by a UGC Major Research Project, Change Continuity in Student Radicalism (2009), a revised version of which was published by Levant Books, Kolkata, in 2015. This project was followed by the Principal Investigators participation in the Indo-Hungarian Educational Exchange Programme in 2011. There he did a small exploratory study entitled Student Radicalism in Hungary: A Study of Corvinus University Students. The present research is the PIs fourth study on student radicalism. The origin of the present research lay in the political change which Bengal witnessed in May 2011, when the ruling Left Front Government was replaced by the Trinamul- Congress combine. This political change was popularly referred to as paribartan. The objective of this study was to examine whether students of Post-Left Bengal are in favour of radical social change. By Post-Left Bengal, we mean the period after May 2011 to the present time. The Constitution of India proclaims India to be a Sovereign, Secular, Socialist Democratic Republic. ![]() The Preamble to our constitution has had a great impact on social scientists. Western scholars have been deeply impressed by the high ideals of the Indian constitution, like secularism, democracy, justice, liberty, equality and fraternity, as stated in the Preamble. Noted political theorist, Ernest Barker, included our Preamble in his book, Principles of Social and Political Theory. The Principal Investigator also included the Preamble in this study because it is from the declaration in the Preamble that this research project takes off. The Preamble expresses the desire of Indians for radical social change. The provisions of the Indian Constitution, as laid out in Parts III and IV, indicate the influence of socialist ideas on the makers of the Indian constitution. How do students of Post-Left Bengal view radical social change Apart from this question, we have sought answers to several subsidiary research questions, like the relation between systemic and interactional radicalism, student radicalism and globalization, student radicalism and role image, student radicalism and UPA Government, student radicalism and Left Front Government, and, student radicalism and Post-Left Bengal.
